Was not bad as it could have been better written as my dad and mother also grew up at this time. My dad lived out in the country from the small town of Merkel and my in Abilene and I heard the story's growing up.
This book inspires the reader to look beyond names and dates on geneology charts. These heartfelt stories not only document the personalities and historical background of the times, they tell of memories of the good times, the enduring hope of how faith in God and hard work, turned tragedies and dashed dreams into understanding and love of family. Families are not perfect, but we can only see the beauty of this legacy when it is recorded. Only then can we see how dreams came true - "a legacy of love, tenacity, and faith."
What a gift Wanda Strange has written for present and future family members as well as the general public! Legacy presents very precise historical family information as well as a way of life which baby boomers will recognize and remember. Evoking long forgotten memories enhances the reading pleasure. Wanda's love of family is an inspiration for all of her readers.
This story of Legacy is one of the most enjoyable reads I’ve run across in I don’t remember when. I agree wholeheartedly with each of the previous comments... especially L. Bell’s. I am a member of the family, but our parents were not close, so we didn’t get to know each other very well. Wanda’s gift with words partnering with memories and period facts make this such a hard book to put down. Even if I weren’t related with certain recognitions, what I liked best was how easy it was to fully step into a different place in time and feel the reality of home and family. A truly encompassing flash from the not-so-long ago past.
I laughed. I cried. I learned bits of history I never knew before. The research conducted by the author made this book such a a great read, much more than simply stories of a family's heritage. Admittedly, I'm part of this family. Even though I didn't remember everything, I imagined being there and it made me think of my own stories and even my own memories from some of them. Wanda Strange did a great job of transparency and didn't hide some not so pretty things, and at the same time honored our ancestors.
I love the short story format as well, which makes it easy to read. It definitely creates a desire to write down things from my past for my children and grandchildren. We all have stories, and I'm amazed at Wanda's ability to put so much past in writing, lest we forget from where we came. Great job.
